Gearing Up for Vacation
I often get asked- what do I do when I go on vacation? I want to offer tips and tricks to have a thriving starter when you return.
Feed your starter for three days before leaving
Let it sit out and feed every 12-24 hours. This ensures that your starter will be super active and healthy before leaving.
Feed 2x the amount of flour
Normally, you will feed at a 1:1:1 ratio. However, if you plan on being gone for 1-2 weeks, you will feed your starter 1:1:2. One part starter, one part water, and two parts flour.
Example: 1/4 cup starter, 1/4 cup water, 1/2 cup flour
***It will be shaggy and VERY thick! Don’t worry!***
Place in a large jar in the fridge.
Why?
The live culture will eat the gluten over time. The warmer the environment, the faster it will consume the food and then fall. If you give it extra flour and place it in the fridge, it will slow down the process, therefore, allowing you MORE time before each feeding.
Simply let it reach room temperature and feed it at a 1:1:1 ratio when returning home.
Happy Vacationing!
