Caramel Rolls-From My Great Grandma Alma
My great-grandma was the most patient and kind person I have ever met. She used to say, “haste makes waste.” Every Wednesday night, she would have warm caramel rolls for us to eat after dinner. I knew these rolls were made from pure love and patience. Please enjoy this family recipe!
Dough:
1/4 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of shortening
1/2 cup of boiling water
1 egg (beaten)
1 tsp. of sugar
1 package of yeast
1/2 cup of warm water
1 tsp. of salt
3 cups of flour
Caramel for rolls:
1 cup brown sugar
2 T. water
1 t. white vinegar
2 T. white syrup (corn syrup)
4 T. butter
1/2 t. vanilla
_______________
Cream the sugar and shortening together. Add the boiling water and heat until dissolved.
Next, add the egg and mix well.
Dissolve the package of heat in a 1/2 cup of warm water with 1 tsp. of sugar. Mix well until you see bubbles.
Stir the flour and salt together in a separate bowl.
Mix all together, beat it well and let it rise for at least 1 hour.
Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch in thickness. Spread with butter. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
Roll up like jelly rolls and pinch inches together. Cut until 1 inch slices.
Make caramel and place the mixture into a pan. Put the 1 inch slices on the caramel mixture. Let it rise for 1 hour.
Heat the oven to 365 F and bake for 20-25 minutes.
Turn upside down on tin foil to cool. *Be careful when you tip the pan, don’t burn yourself.
